Celebrity Mom Elisabeth Rohm Partners with Upromise by Sallie Mae to Bring Greater Awareness of the Importance of Saving for College

SLM

Half of American parents are saving for college and for those who are not, 47 percent cite a barrier other than money, such as not knowing how to start or procrastination, according to a national study from Sallie Mae and Ipsos. To spur families across the country to get started, Upromise by Sallie Mae today launched its second annual “Make the Pledge, Keep the Promise” $100,000 giveaway, with celebrity mom Elisabeth Rohm.

Best known for her roles on Law & Order and The Client List, actress Rohm is mom to five-year-old Easton and writes a weekly celebrity mom blog on People.com. “My parents were always supportive of my education aspirations. Graduating from college before beginning my acting career was a major personal accomplishment and I am already planning for my daughter’s college education,” said Rohm, a Sarah Lawrence College alumna. “I’m proud to work with Upromise by Sallie Mae to encourage more families to take action and start saving towards their children’s higher education goals.”

Whether you’re saving for a child’s future, paying for your own college expenses or paying back a student loan, you can enter to win when you share why you’re committed to turning the dream of education into reality. To enter, visit Upromise.com to sign up for free membership and take the pledge now through Oct. 10. For additional chances to win, shop through Upromise.com, dine at Upromise partner restaurants or download the free college savings tool “RewardU.” Fifty finalists will be randomly selected, and the public will vote to select the 10 grand prize winners of $10,000.

“Most parents want to help their kids pay for college but many simply don’t know where, how or when to start planning for it,” said John Ward, senior vice president, Sallie Mae. “With this year’s Pledge giveaway we aim to inspire thousands of people to start or supplement saving for college.”

Upromise by Sallie Mae is free to join, and members have earned more than $750 million in cash for college since 2001. Whether saving for a child’s college education, paying for a child now in school or repaying student loans, Upromise members can earn cash back for college through everyday purchases, shopping online at hundreds of major retailers, dining out, or booking travel. Upromise cash rewards can be invested in a tax-deferred 529 college savings plan, deposited into a Sallie Mae High-Yield Savings Account, used to help pay down an eligible Sallie Mae student loan, or sent to members in the form of a check.
