TORONTO, Oct. 8, 2013 /CNW/ - GE (NYSE: GE) and McLean's Mountain Wind
Limited Partnership today announced that the McLean's Mountain Wind
Farm on Manitoulin Island, Ontario, will be powered by 24 GE 2.85-103 turbines. Located in Lake Huron, Manitoulin Island is the largest freshwater
island in the world. The McLean's Mountain Wind Farm will provide 60
megawatts (MW) of power to the grid. The project is a 50/50 partnership
between Northland Power Inc. (TSX: NPI) and Mnidoo Mnising Power (MMP).
"This wind farm will provide renewable energy to Ontario while
respecting the environment and creating resources to strengthen the
United Chiefs and Councils of Mnidoo Mnising communities. Recognizing
the unique topography of Manitoulin island, we ultimately decided that
GE's 2.85-103 model wind turbines were the best fit to meet the project
requirements," said John Brace, CEO of Northland Power, one of Canada's
leading independent power producers.
GE will provide operations and maintenance through a 10-year full service agreement for the McLean's Mountain Wind Farm. The facility will benefit from
around-the-clock remote monitoring and diagnostics through GE's global
wind monitoring center in Schenectady, N.Y., which also will help
maximize wind turbine operating performance and life.
"GE is pleased to work with Northland Power and its partner Mnidoo
Mnising Power and is committed to supporting the growth of renewable
energy in Canada. As of 2013, we have installed 1.8 gigawatts of wind
power in Canada, which accounts for 29 percent of Canada's total
installed base. Wind energy can continue to be an important part of
Canada's low-carbon electricity mix, complementing hydro in Quebec,
surpassing coal generation in Ontario, diversifying the Alberta grid
and helping to meet British Columbia's increasing energy demands," said
Anne McEntee, president and CEO of GE's renewable energy business."
