State Sen. Cunningham, State Rep. Burke to Join 59 Locked Out Funeral Directors

(Chicago, IL) — Members of Illinois' political, religious and labor communities will rally in support of locked out Teamster-represented funeral directors and drivers at noon on Thursday, Oct. 10, at Blake-Lamb Funeral Home, 4727 W. 103rd St., Oak Lawn, IL 60453.

The rally will mark 100 days on the picket line for the funeral home employees, who have been fighting since July 2 to preserve health care and retirement benefits that Service Corporation International (NYSE: SCI) wants to strip away.

The event will feature several guest speakers, including Teamsters Joint Council 25 President John T. Coli, State Sen. Bill Cunningham, State Rep. Kelly Burke, Chicago Fire Department Chaplain Fr. Thomas Mulcrone, State Sen. Tom Cullerton, Teamsters Central Region Vice President Becky Strzechowski and Chicago Alderman Nick Sposato.

Industry giant SCI on Aug. 19 locked out the 59 workers following the first six weeks of their unfair labor practice strike. SCI operates 16 Chicago-area funeral homes under the Dignity Memorial brand name. With more than 1,400 funeral facilities, SCI is valued at approximately $4 billion and has seen its stock price rise 94 percent in just two years.

Local 727 urges all Chicago-area residents to support community-owned funeral homes. Recommended funeral home alternatives can be found at www.IntegrityInIllinois.com.

Teamsters Local 727 has represented Chicago's funeral directors and embalmers since 1946, and it represents more than 6,800 hardworking men and women in the Chicago area.
