The award was presented to Fredriksen during the annual Miners Celebration gala at Tamarack in Beckley, West Virginia on October 3.  The ceremony celebrates the past, present and future of West Virginia's coal mining enterprise and honors industry leaders for their professional achievements.

"The West Virginia mining industry is very important to us, for example, as a destination for jobs for many graduates from our safety technology program," commented Dr. Tony Szwilski, chairman of the event planning committee and director of Marshall University's Center for Environmental, Geotechnical and Applied Sciences. "The industry depends upon thousands of individuals in a number of different roles and every person – whether they work as a safety engineer, miner, environmental professional or equipment supplier – contributes to each ton of coal produced, as do countless community leaders, educators and mining families.

Fredriksen was one of six individuals to receive the 'Because of You' award.  Each honoree was recognized for his or her contributions to West Virginia's coal mining community.

"I am honored to receive this esteemed award, and graciously accept it on behalf of the women that work with me at CONSOL Energy, and in our industry," commented Fredriksen. "The challenges in the mining industry are great—but they open even greater opportunities.  Opportunities that will keep coal a vibrant part of the energy backbone of America."

Fredriksen is responsible for the leadership, planning, direction, operation and strategy for environmental affairs, compliance, permitting, and related regulatory and legislative affairs within all business units of the company.  She serves as the principal liaison with senior state and federal environmental policy makers.

Since joining CONSOL Energy, she has spearheaded the company's annual Corporate Responsibility Report to further improve transparency on key performance metrics including safety and environmental compliance.  She also brought the company's environmental management into compliance with the internationally recognized ISO-14001 system.

Prior to joining CONSOL Energy, she served as principal and founder of her own consulting company, CapitolPlus Consulting, representing clients with interests in energy and the environment.  Ms. Fredriksen has more than 18 years' experience at senior levels of industry and government.

The Miners' Celebration is a cooperative project of the Center for Environmental, Geotechnical and Applied Sciences at Marshall University; the National Coal Heritage Area; the United Mine Workers of America; the West Virginia Coal Association; Strategic Solutions LLC; and the West Virginia Division of Energy, Office of Coalfield Community Development.
