DETROIT, Oct. 23, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Children's Hospital of Michigan Foundation and Kohl's invite the community to celebrate Safety Day from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24 at the Children's Hospital of Michigan Stilson Specialty Center (42700 Garfield, Clinton Township, MI 48038). The event will feature Detroit Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock, free bike helmets, children's activities, music, snacks and local public safety officials. Kohl's will present a check for $467,118 to Children's Hospital of Michigan Foundation.
The gift supports Kohl's Injury Prevention Program (KIPP) at DMC Children's Hospital of Michigan, which provides injury prevention education and safety tools to decrease unintentional child deaths and injuries. Since 2000, Kohl's has donated more than $5,641,453 through Kohl's Cares® to the Children's Hospital of Michigan Foundation to benefit patients and families at DMC Children's Hospital of Michigan.
"We are grateful for the continued support of Kohl's and the Kohl's Injury Prevention Program," said Tony Werner, president and CEO for Children's Hospital of Michigan Foundation. "Kohl's is a valuable partner, and their commitment to safety is essential to keeping children of all ages protected and injury free."
Kohl's leadership will present the donation at 5 p.m. to Werner and Joseph L. Lelli, M.D., chief of pediatric surgery at DMC Children's Hospital of Michigan. Meanwhile, the community is invited to Kohl's Safety Day for free bike helmets and fittings, activities, music and snacks. Babcock will sign the first 100 helmets given to children age 14 and younger. The event is sponsored by Kohl's, 96.3 WDVD-FM, Garden Fresh Salsa, Little Caesars Pizza Store #1, BIGGBY Coffee Store #272, Joe Cornell Entertainment, and Perry's Tents and Events.
The KIPP at DMC Children's Hospital of Michigan offers safety educational materials and products such as smoke alarms, car seats and bike helmets to children and their families. They also visit area schools to teach kids about personal safety.
"Kohl's has been a dedicated supporter of children's health in Michigan since 2000," Lelli said. "We are very fortunate to have such a great partner. Along with the donations to the Foundation, which allow us to continue injury prevention programs, Kohl's Associates also volunteer on a regular basis to make many of our community outreach events a success."
Kohl's commitment to Children's Hospital of Michigan Foundation is made possible through the Kohl's Cares cause merchandise program. Kohl's has raised more than $231 million through this merchandise program.
