Verizon Wireless Announces Update On Northway Project

VZ, VOD

- 11 sites activated since 2008 to help close 80+-mile coverage gap - Remaining 15-mile gap to be covered by three planned sites - Project targeted for completion in 2014

ALBANY, N.Y., Oct. 24, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --

WHO:

Verizon Wireless, operator of the nation's largest 4G LTE network and largest, most reliable 3G network

WHAT:

Verizon Wireless has filled in approximately 65 miles of a previous 80+-mile coverage gap along I-87, the Northway, by building and activating 11 new cell sites along the highway corridor since 2008. The remaining 15-mile gap will be covered by three cell sites targeted for completion in 2014.

WHERE:

Along the I-87 corridor between Lake George, NY and Keeseville, NY.

BACKGROUND:

For a number of years, more than 80 miles of the Northway, spanning roughly from the north end of Lake George to Keeseville, had little or no wireless service. Since 2008, Verizon Wireless, in close partnership with the Adirondack Park Agency, has built and activated 11 new cell sites that provide coverage to approximately 65 miles of the Northway corridor.

Three sites that will cover the remaining 15-mile coverage gap are currently in development. Those sites are targeted for completion in 2014.

The Northway project is part of the more than $1.6 billion – more than $100 million every year – that Verizon Wireless has invested in its Upstate New York network since 2000. The company has invested more than $65 million year to date in 2013 to enhance and expand its network across Upstate New York.
