TD employees volunteer to help out across the country during November - Financial Literacy Month

TORONTO, Oct. 30, 2013 /CNW/ - Halloween, All Hallow's Eve, may be a dark and spooky time for many people, but on the eve of Financial Literacy Month, this year Canadians have one less thing to be afraid of - understanding their personal finances.

To mark Financial Literacy Month, TD Bank Group and its employees will be making a difference in communities across the country by helping Canadians to improve their knowledge, skills and confidence when it comes to finances. TD employees will be lending their expertise to people of all ages to better understand topics such as budgeting, investing, banking, debt and borrowing.  TD volunteers will partner with organizations including ABC Life Literacy Canada's Money Matters and Junior Achievement Canada's Economics for Success to deliver these services to Canadians.

"For the past ten years, I have volunteered with kids in Grade 8 through the Junior Achievement Program. In our sessions, I find that they are very eager to learn - they want to be savvy about finances and prepare for their future," says Laura Murray, IT Specialist at TD Bank Group in Scarborough. "I emphasize the importance of education in reaching their future financial goals. Once you make it simple for them to understand how to balance their income with their expenses, they quickly see that it isn't just about buying the things you want when you want them - there is hard work and planning that needs to be there too."

TD also donated over $1.3 million to support these programs which help Canadians reach long term goals for the future and more importantly instil more confidence when it comes to talking about money and finances.

"TD believes that financial literacy is an important life skill for people young and old.  It's something that is invaluable for success, and that is why Education & Financial Literacy is one of the main priorities here at TD," says Scott Mullin, Vice President, Community Relations, TD Bank Group. "Our support is focused on helping youth through classroom programs and assisting at-risk, underserved individuals and their families. We are very proud of our TD employees who donate their time in their own communities, helping their neighbours and community members."
