Tokyo, Oct 30, 2013 - (JCN Newswire) - Toyota Motor Corporation names 24 projects today that will receive grants under the Toyota Environmental Activities Grant Program between April 1, 2013 and March 31, 2014. Recipients include a forest ecosystem conservation project in Vietnam and a seabed revitalization project in an area damaged by the Great East Japan Earthquake.
In keeping with the Toyota Environmental Activities Grant Progra's emphasis on environmental technology and human resource development for the purpose of revitalizing and conserving the environment, this year's grants will focus on projects relating to biodiversity and global warming. A total of 123 applications were received in two grant categories (Japan-based projects and projects based outside Japan), and initial screening and selection were conducted by an expert committee chaired by Dr. Keiko Nakamura, director general of the JT Biohistory Research Hall. The selection committee decided to award grants to ten overseas projects and 14 Japan-based projects. In the Japan-based category, the committee continued to prioritize projects relating to areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake. Grant winners also included projects relating to the final UNESCO World Conference on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), which will be held in Japan in 2014.
A ceremony will be held in December, where representatives of the selected projects will be presented with grant certificates. A final report meeting is also scheduled for next spring.
The Toyota Environmental Activities Grant Program was launched in 2000 in commemoration of Toyota's receipt of the Global 500 Award* from the United Nations Environment Programme in the previous year. Since then, the program has supported 257 pragmatically minded projects conducted by NPOs and other private non-profit groups in 51 countries and regions.
