BACKGROUND:

The Parliamentary Internship Programme was established in 1969 with all-party support in the House of Commons. It gives ten university graduates each year the opportunity to work and study on Parliament Hill. During the ten-month paid internship, they assist Members of Parliament on both sides of the House of Commons with committee and constituency work while undertaking academic research, weekly seminars and comparative study tours to other legislatures. Alumni have made significant contributions to Canadian public life as leaders in their communities, in academe, in journalism and in both private and public sectors.

PIP strives to build public knowledge of Parliament by sharing the intern experience on-line and in workshops with younger Canadians, through public discussion of their research and through the recognition of significant achievements in Canadian public life at the annual Alumni Dinner.

The Programme is independent of government and strictly non-partisan. It operates under the auspices of the Speaker of the House of Commons and is managed by the Canadian Political Science Association with support from private and public sector friends and sponsors, the engagement of Members of Parliament and the commitment of former parliamentarians, interns and alumni.
