Unum Group (NYSE: UNM) ranks third among large life and health insurers
in the 2013 Best Places to Work in Insurance recognition from Business
Insurance magazine.
Earlier this fall, the company’s Colonial Life business in South
Carolina and Unum in Maine were also named to the Best Places to Work
lists in those states. Unum is one of 60 companies named to Maine’s 2013
Best Places to Work list, the eighth straight year the company has
earned this acclaim. Colonial Life was named one of the top large Best
Places to Work in South Carolina for the fifth time.
“These awards are especially meaningful because they weigh heavily on
what our employees say about the company,” said Marie Clements,
assistant vice president of Human Resources Programs and Services. “It’s
important to us that our employees have healthy, fulfilling lives
outside the office, so we provide more than just competitive salaries
and benefits. We also offer resources and opportunities such as a 24/7
nurse call line, onsite fitness centers and walking tracks, and
company-wide recognition for volunteers.”
Unum also encourages employees to build strategies for career
development. Ashley Mehrer, director and associate actuary, said this
encouragement is how she landed the job she has now.
“If there’s something that you’re interested in, or that you want to
learn about, they’ll put you in touch with the right people in order to
build out a unique developmental opportunity,” Mehrer said. “The
attitude here is much more focused on making something work rather than
on all of the reasons it won’t.”
Unum was one of 65 companies named to the Business Insurance list, and
this is the fifth consecutive year the company was recognized as one of
the best in the business.
The Best Places to Work awards are coordinated by the Harrisburg,
Pa.-based Best Companies Group. Decisions are based on results from
random employee surveys and an evaluation of the company’s processes and
procedures.
