The New York Times (NYTimes.com)
today launched on Google Play Newsstand, Google’s news reader app for
Android phones and tablets offering newspapers, magazines, blogs and
other sites. Users of Newsstand will have access to the latest news and
award-winning journalism of The New York Times, designed and formatted
for optimal reading on Android tablets and phones.
The Times on Google Play Newsstand is an extension of the NYT Everywhere
strategy, which is designed to expand The Times’s reach to users on
third-party platforms. The launch also demonstrates The Times’s
commitment to Android, where users can already access Times content via
its Android app, Flipboard for Android and the web.
Following authentication within Newsstand, Times subscribers will have
full access to content including full articles, videos, photo slideshows
and blogs.
To mark the launch, The Times is raising the article limit for
non-subscribers using Newsstand to 15 articles a day from Nov. 20 to
Jan. 5. Like with other mobile applications, non-subscribers will have
access to up to three articles each day after Jan. 5.
The Times is offering a special monthly rate of $15 for a subscription
to NYTimes
on Newsstand, which includes access on phone and tablet devices. A
free 30-day introductory period is included in the subscription price.
“With the launch of Google Play Newsstand, we are able to expand our NYT
Everywhere strategy even further and reach readers where they want to
access our premium digital content,” said Denise Warren, executive vice
president, digital products and services, The New York Times. “By
raising the article limit through the holidays, Newsstand users who may
not yet be Times subscribers will get a significant sense of the depth
and authority of the news, opinion and multimedia offerings available on
NYTimes.com.”
