"Scarlet Says Good-Bye" Children's Book Wins Mom's Choice Award

UNH

"Scarlet Says Good-Bye," a children’s book from UnitedHealthcare Educational Publishing GroupTM, has won a prestigious Mom’s Choice Award®, an international seal of approval that parents, educators, librarians and retailers look for when selecting quality materials for children and families.

“Scarlet Says Good-Bye” helps children understand what hospice is and how they can spend time with a parent or grandparent to create new memories as their loved one approaches end-of-life. Designed for children under 12, the book includes an illustrated short story, ideas for activities with their loved one and games to do on their own while sitting with someone who may not be responsive.

“‘Scarlet Says Good-Bye’ offers a gentle and simple way to explain the philosophy and role of hospice to children. The book promotes positive interactions between the child and his or her loved one who is dying. It is a valuable tool as children begin their journey of grief,” said Sarah Kroenke, BSSW, LSW, a hospice grief counselor in Minneapolis.

The book was created with support and funding from UnitedHealthcare as part of the company’s effort to develop innovations that help people live healthier lives and enhance the health care system.

“‘Scarlet Says Good-Bye’ is helping bring comfort to children who are experiencing the loss of a loved one,” said Christine L. Thompson, a UnitedHealthcare employee and the book’s author. “To be acknowledged by the Mom’s Choice Awards and receive this distinction is truly an honor.”

The book is available for purchase here. A free electronic version is available to read here. People can also ‘Like’ “Scarlet Says Good-Bye” on Facebook and follow @ScarletGoodbye on Twitter.
