Grand Prairie, TX -- Dec 11, 2013 / (http://www.myprgenie.com) -- The City of Grand Prairie's annual Prairie Lights powered by Gexa Energy, a leading retail electricity provider in Texas, will brighten the holidays with four million holiday lights, but the event's carbon footprint will be reduced with Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) secured by its title sponsor.

"In our efforts to give back to the environment for the second year in a row, we have partnered with our parent company, NextEra Energy Resources, to use renewable energy certificates to offset the estimated electricity usage associated with Prairie Lights over the 34-night event," said Brian Landrum, president, Gexa Energy. "The 236 renewable energy certificates represent the annual equivalent of removing 35 passenger cars from the road or offsetting the CO2 emissions from electricity usage in nearly 23 homes*."

Renewable Energy Certificates represent proof that 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity was generated from an eligible renewable energy resource and are separate from the actual electricity produced. NextEra Energy Resources offers 100 percent Green-e Energy Certified Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). Green-e is the nation's leading independent certification and verification program for renewable energy certificates. It is a voluntary commercial entity and consumer protection program that verifies superior, certified renewable energy options offered by utilities, power generators and marketers in the wholesale and retail markets.
