TeleCommunication Systems, Inc. Defeats Infringement Claim by Cassidian Communications, Inc. in Texas Case

ANNAPOLIS, Md., Dec. 20,  2013 /PRNewswire/ -- TeleCommunication Systems, Inc. (TCS) (NASDAQ: TSYS), a world leader in highly reliable and secure mobile communication technology, today announced that TCS has prevailed in a patent dispute filed by Cassidian Communications, Inc. (Cassidian) against TCS and its wholly owned subsidiary microDATA GIS, Inc. (2:12-cv-00162-JRG). On December 20, 2013, an Eastern District of Texas jury returned a verdict in favor of TCS and microDATA. All asserted claims were found to be not infringed and invalid. Cassidian originally filed the lawsuit against microDATA on March 26, 2012 asserting US Patent 6,744,858 prior to TCS' July 2012 purchase of microDATA. TCS was named as a defendant after the acquisition.

Cassidian had asserted the patent against a number of companies providing technology in the 9-1-1 public safety market. While other companies settled with Cassidian, TCS took the case to trial after the company's attempts to mediate the dispute were unsuccessful.

TCS Chairman, CEO and President Maurice B. Tose stated: "We are pleased with the Court's decision that affirms our position that patent claims asserted by Cassidian were invalid and not infringed. As a leader in 9-1-1 technology, this is a successful step forward that we share with all public safety. Together we look forward to further technology innovation to best serve the emergency communications needs of our communities."

TCS leads the nation on ESInet deployments and is the premier provider of NG9-1-1 software and end-to-end solutions. Offerings include NENA i3 standards-compliant call-routing and call-handling systems. In 2006, TCS became the first company to deliver NG9-1-1 calls, and the company has since delivered more NENA i3 9-1-1 traffic than all other manufacturers combined. TCS completed the nation's first successful cellular 9-1-1 call more than a decade ago and now deploys cellular and Voice over IP (VoIP) 9-1-1 service to operators nationwide, supporting half of all wireless and VoIP Enhanced 9-1-1 (E9-1-1) calls.
