Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/p544xv/epicast_report)
has announced the addition of the "EpiCast
Report: Ulcerative Colitis - Epidemiology Forecast to 2022"
report to their offering.
Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that
causes ulcers in the innermost lining of the colon and rectum. The
colon's ability to absorb water is decreased, which leads to progressive
loosening of the stool, bloody stool, and sometimes cramping or
abdominal pain with urgency for bowel movement (CDC, 2013; NDDIC, 2013).
The exact cause or triggers of the disease are yet to be identified.
However, it is known that in people with ulcerative colitis, the body's
immune system mistakes bacteria, food, and other materials in the
intestine for foreign objects and attacks the colon tissues, leading to
chronic inflammation of the colon linings (CDC, 2013).
Ulcerative colitis commonly affects teenagers and young adults, which
could result in poor development or growth; nonetheless, the disease can
also occur in children and older individuals (CCFA, 2013). Due to the
disease's unknown etiology, there is currently no cure available for
ulcerative colitis other than surgically removing the affected colon
and/or rectum as the last resort (CCFA, 2013; CDC, 2013).
This report provides an overview of the risk factors, comorbidities, and
the global trends for ulcerative colitis in the 10 major markets (10MM)
(US, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK, Japan, Canada, China, and
India). In addition, the report also includes a 10-year forecast of
diagnosed incident and prevalent cases of ulcerative colitis for all
markets except India, segmented by age (10 to = 85 years) and sex.
Due to the lack of diagnosed incidence/prevalence data for ulcerative
colitis in India, total incident and prevalent cases, rather than
diagnosed incident and prevalent cases of ulcerative colitis, with the
same age and sex segments are forecast for India.
The authors epidemiologists forecast that there were 134,109 incident
cases of ulcerative colitis in the 10MM in 2012, and the number of
incident cases will grow 12.2% over the next decade to 150,530 incident
cases.
In 2012, there were 1,860,616 prevalent cases of ulcerative colitis in
the 10MM. Each of the 10MM, except Germany, will see an increase in
prevalent cases over the 10-year forecast period.
The forecast is supported by historical data for ulcerative colitis
gathered from peer-reviewed journals and country-specific studies, in
addition to reports taken from national health authorities and
international organizations with interests in gastroenterology or IBD.
This forecast provides segmentation of ulcerative colitis for the 10MM
segmented by age and sex, thereby providing a comprehensive overview of
ulcerative colitis trends.
