Consumers Energy Helps Girl Scouts Become Energy Experts

CMS

Celebrating Women's History Month

JACKSON, Mich., March 4, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- In celebration of Women's History Month, Consumers Energy is hosting four Girl Scout events across Michigan this March to inspire young women to pursue dreams in energy and science fields.

"It's important that the Girl Scouts become confident that females are capable of excelling in technical fields," Carol-Ann Cramer, education programs administrator, said. "It's our hope too that the girls will see a potential career path at Consumers Energy after learning about science and energy."

Girl Scouts will learn about energy sources, how electricity is generated, how electricity travels, and about careers women pursue in the energy industry. They'll also hear about trailblazing women who changed the history of energy and contributed major scientific achievements.

Upon completion of an event, the Scouts will earn the Consumers Energy "Energy Expert Patch."

Since 1990, Consumers Energy and the Consumers Energy Foundation have provided more than $162,000 to support Girl Scouts in Michigan. This includes grants for capital projects at camps, event sponsorships and volunteer grants.

Consumers Energy employees and volunteers are hosting the events at service centers on March 22 in Jackson, and on March 29 in Saginaw, Royal Oak, and Battle Creek. Girl Scouts may sign up for one of these events and find details at www.ConsumersEnergy.com/scouts. Events have a limited number of spots available and are filled first come first serve.

The Energy Expert Patch program is free for Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts to complete with their pack or troop online at ConsumersEnergy.com/scouts. Activities can usually be completed within two hours, and align with many other council badges, journeys, and requirements.

Consumers Energy, Michigan's largest utility, is the principal subsidiary of CMS Energy (NYSE: CMS), providing natural gas and electricity to 6.5 million of the state's 10 million residents in all 68 Lower Peninsula counties.
