It is with great sorrow that Global Partners LP (NYSE:GLP) today
announced the passing of Alfred A. “Fred” Slifka, Chairman of the Board
of Directors of its general partner, Global GP LLC, who died
unexpectedly at his home in Boston yesterday. He was 81. Mr. Slifka’s
brother, Richard, Vice Chairman of the Board since March 2005, will
succeed him as Chairman.
“Fred contributed immense leadership and integrity to Global Partners
and the New England fuel industry over a career that spanned more than
60 years,” said Edward Faneuil, the Partnership’s Executive Vice
President and General Counsel. “His vision, insight and experience were
critical in helping to guide and grow the company. We extend our deepest
condolences and support to Fred’s wife, Gilda, his son Eric, our
President and Chief Executive Officer, his brother, Richard, and their
entire family.”
Mr. Slifka entered the oil industry in 1948 when he began working for
Slifky’s Reliable Oil Company, the business started by his father,
Abraham, during the Depression. In the 1950s and 60s, he and Richard
transformed the business into one of New England's largest wholesalers
of distillates, gasoline, residual oil and bunker fuel. Mr. Slifka and
his family successfully completed Global Partners’ initial public
offering and listing on the New York Stock Exchange in 2005.
Mr. Slifka worked tirelessly on behalf of numerous civic and charitable
organizations including the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Boston
Children’s Hospital and Hebrew SeniorLife.
Mr. Slifka is survived by his wife, Gilda; his children, Adam Slifka and
his wife, Gail, Jennifer Slifka Vidal and her husband, Luis, and Eric
Slifka and his wife, Laurie; his brother, Richard and his wife, Rosalyn;
and seven grandchildren.
