Smell Gas, Act Fast; New Multi-Language Con Edison Videos Aim to Keep New Yorkers Safe

ED

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - Apr 11, 2014) -  Con Edison is releasing gas safety videos in Spanish, Chinese and Korean to educate non-English speaking New Yorkers about what to do if they smell gas.

The 30-second videos feature Con Edison employees who offered their bilingual skills and volunteered their time to help keep New Yorkers safe. The spots will be circulated through Con Edison's social media platforms: Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.  The videos will also be on Con Edison's website, coned.com. To view the videos click the following links: Spanish video (click here), Korean video (click here), Chinese video (click here).

The message is simple: Smell gas, act fast. The videos cover signs of a potential gas leak and what to do; most importantly:

  • Leave your home immediately and take others with you;
  • Open windows before you leave if the odor is faint;
  • Do NOT do anything to create a spark, such as lighting a match, turning appliances on or off, or using a phone or cell phone.

Con Edison operates approximately 4,300 miles of natural gas mains in Manhattan, the Bronx, parts of Queens, and Westchester County. The company inspects and monitors the system for potential gas leaks throughout the year.

Con Edison is a subsidiary of Consolidated Edison, Inc. (NYSE: ED), one of the nation's largest investor-owned energy companies, with approximately $12 billion in annual revenues and $41 billion in assets. The utility provides electric, gas and steam service to more than three million customers in New York City and Westchester County, New York.
