WellPoint, Inc. (NYSE: WLP) announced today Martin Silverstein, M.D.,
has been named chief strategy officer, effective April 28th. In this
role, Dr. Silverstein will oversee WellPoint’s enterprise marketing,
corporate development and strategy functions, and will be responsible
for short and long-term strategic planning to ensure the Company is
maximizing the value of its assets and capturing growth across its
geographies and businesses.

Dr. Silverstein joins WellPoint from The Boston Consulting Group (BCG)
where he was a Senior Partner and Managing Director. In his more than
twenty-five years at BCG, Dr. Silverstein has held many leadership roles
from establishing its U.S. Payers and Providers sector and having led
the firm's Global Health Care Practice. He has consulted to clients in
most sectors of the health care industry, including managed care
organizations, integrated delivery and hospital systems,
biopharmaceutical manufacturers, and retail pharmacies. Before joining
BCG he worked as a physician in private and corporate practice and as a
senior scientist and project manager at the Health Data Institute.
Dr. Silverstein holds a medical degree from the Yale University School
of Medicine and is board certified in internal medicine. He received his
MBA from Harvard Business School, and earned his bachelor’s degree in
economics and natural sciences from the University of Pennsylvania.
