TORONTO, ON--(Marketwired - April 22, 2014) -
ViXS Systems Inc. (TSX: VXS), a pioneer and leader in media processing solutions, today announced that it is the first and only company with a shipping Ultra High Definition (UHD) 4K HEVC 10-bit System-on-Chip (SoC) to demonstrate a Reference Design Kit implementation. The XCode 6400 SoC is a high-performance, yet cost-effective, solution for the next wave of set-top boxes (STBs), gateways and other consumer premise equipment solutions aiming to deliver UHD 4K content services. By natively supporting UHD and silicon-based transcoding, the XCode 6400 provides forward and backward content compatibility, lengthening the service life of the devices which better amortizes the CPE capital cost. The XCode 6400 includes support for 10-bit High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), enabling operators to take advantage of up to 50% bandwidth savings, critical for making delivery of UHD services economically feasible. By pre-integrating RDK, ViXS gives operators control of the functionality and roadmap of their CPE.
"ViXS Systems has been instrumental in making UHD 4K a reality in the broadcast industry and with our introduction of a reference platform that combines UHD 4K, HEVC, and RDK, we expect momentum to increase further still," said Sally Daub, President and CEO, ViXS Systems Inc. "RDK is a feature rich framework for pay TV operators that, when combined with ViXS' UHD 4K media processing, becomes a powerful platform for accelerating the deployment of STBs and gateways to address growing consumer demand for the unbelievable viewing experience of Ultra HD."
RDK is a pre-integrated software bundle that provides a common framework for powering customer premise equipment (CPE) from pay television service providers, such as set-top boxes and gateways. The RDK was created to accelerate the deployment of next-generation video products and services. It enables service providers to standardize certain elements of these devices, but also to easily customize the applications and user experiences that ride on top. More than 140 licensees, including CE manufacturers, SOC vendors, software developers, system integrators, and service providers, support the RDK. It is administered by RDK Management LLC, a joint venture between Comcast Cable, Time Warner Cable, and Liberty Global. The RDK software is available at no cost to RDK licensees in a shared source manner, and RDK community member companies can contribute software changes and enhancements to the RDK stack. The ViXS SoC RDK demonstration will be at the Intel Booth #2507 at the Cable Show 2014 in Los Angeles, California.
