Twelve Schools Participate in the 68th Annual Sears Ontario Drama Festival Provincial Showcase

SRSCQ

Sears Canada CEO Doug Campbell to Attend Friday, May 9

TORONTO, May 6, 2014 /CNW/ - The stage is set for another exciting Provincial Showcase of the Sears Ontario Drama Festival.  More than 12,000 students and teachers from 300 secondary schools across Ontario participated in District and Regional festivals during the last few months and some of the outstanding productions will be performed from May 7-10, at 7:00 pm, at Sir John A. Macdonald Secondary School in Hamilton.

The following schools will perform their shows at the Sears Ontario Drama Festival:

  • May 7: Grimsby; John F. Ross; Huron Heights S.S.
  • May 8: Timiskaming District S.S.; ES publique de la Salle; Earl Haig S.S.
  • May 9: Dante Alighieri Academy; Kingston CVI; Westdale
  • May 10: Barrie Central C.I.; Jean-Vanier; Bur Oak S.S.

Doug Campbell, Sears Canada President and CEO, is planning to attend a Festival performance on Friday, May 9 and will provide opening remarks that evening.  The show, Disconnected, performed by Dante Alighieri Academy in Toronto, begins at 7:00 pm.

"Sears Canada is proud to be the title sponsor of this world renowned youth theatre festival," said Mr. Campbell.  "We believe that participating in after-school arts programs helps students learn important life-skills and build core values that will stay with them no matter what career path they follow."

The Ontario Festival is part of a trio of youth drama festivals, including the Sears British Columbia Drama Festival and the Sears Atlantic Drama Festival, each celebrating its fourth season.  The Sears Drama Festivals are part of the Company's commitment to supporting the healthy development of Canadian youth, in particular after-school enrichment programs, which also include sponsorship of Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada, 4-H, Scouts Canada and Girl Guides of Canada.

What began as a small Toronto presentation in 1946 has evolved into the largest youth drama festival of its kind in the world.  Four hundred productions were presented in local area schools in February and March, and those chosen as outstanding at the District level moved on to the six Regional festivals, presented in April.  Twelve productions were selected (two from each region) to participate in the Ontario Showcase, held this week in Hamilton.

During the four-day Ontario Showcase, students receive professional guidance through expert adjudication and have the opportunity to work with theatre professionals in special workshops.

"The Sears Drama Festival is a well established national youth program, enjoyed by thousands of students from across Canada and admired as a model for student involvement in theatre," said Wayne Fairhead, Executive Director, Sears Drama Festivals.  "Our three festivals continue to grow in participant numbers each year, and I anticipate continued growth in the quality and variety of productions as well."

The public is invited to attend the plays, and tickets can be purchased for only $10 for an evening of theatre.  For more information please visit www.searsdramafestival.com.
