Sales and operations planning began as a process to reconcile demand and supply. Inventory was considered an output of this process and did not have an equal seat at the S&OP table. However, advances such as inventory optimization (IO) provide powerful performance levers that help free up working capital while improving service levels, making inventory a critical part of the S&OP process. Today leading companies employ IO on two levels. At a tactical level they can scientifically calculate inventory targets across the entire supply chain.
