Prudential Financial to illuminate its headquarters building in honor of Special Olympics

PRU

WHO

Prudential Financial, Inc., a Founding Partner of the Special Olympics 2014 USA Games, will light its Newark, NJ headquarters building in red, blue and yellow – the color of the Special Olympics – beginning Sunday, June 15 in recognition of the games, which will be held June 14 through June 21 throughout Mercer County, New Jersey. This is the second time in the company’s history that it will illuminate the building in special colors. In addition, the company is planning a variety of other activities to support the athletes who will compete in the games.

WHAT

Prudential will light its building at 751 Broad Street in downtown Newark beginning Sunday, June 15, when the Opening Ceremony is held at Prudential Center, through Friday June 20.

On June 12 at about 3 p.m. the Special Olympics Torch Run will make a stop in front of the company’s headquarters building, 751 Broad Street in downtown Newark, where Prudential will host a small ceremony with the runners to acknowledge them, and present a commemorative gift.

Prudential is Presenting Partner of the Healthy Athletes Experience, which will offer free health screenings – including hearing, dental, healthy lifestyles, fitness and podiatry – to the nearly 3,500 athletes who will compete in 16 Olympic-style team and individual sporting events. Screenings will take place in the Brower Student Center on the campus of The College of New Jersey in Ewing Township, New Jersey beginning Monday, June 16 through Thursday, June 19.

Prudential is broadcasting promotional information about the Special Olympics 2014 Summer Games on its jumbotron advertising sign in Times Square in New York City. The Time Square promotion started June 6 and continues throughout the Games.

The company’s Group Insurance unit is sponsoring the All Stars Sports Card Wall of Fame where athletes will have their photos taken and then printed on baseball cards as a memorabilia of the 2014 Games. Many of these photos also will be displayed on the Times Square sign.

DETAILS

The Healthy Athletes Experience screenings are designed to remove the anxiety and trepidation many people with intellectual disabilities feel when faced with a visit to a physician or dentist. In addition to screenings, the Healthy Athletes Experience will also provide eyeglasses, sunglasses, hearing aids, mouth-guards and other critical items that assist athletes on the playing field and in everyday activity.

“Prudential is delighted to be a Founding Partner of the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games and we are especially proud to sponsor the Healthy Athletes Experience,” said Stephen Pelletier, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Prudential’s U.S. Businesses. “The 2014 Special Olympics USA Games’ theme of ‘Welcome and Acceptance’ highlights the importance of creating a culture of inclusion and mirrors Prudential’s deep commitment to diversity.”

The athletes in the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games will be supported by 1,000 coaches, 10,000 volunteers that include employees of Prudential, and an anticipated 70,000 spectators. The 2014 USA Games will celebrate the Special Olympics movement, promote the ideals of acceptance and inclusion through sport, and showcase the talents of athletes with intellectual disabilities. The 2014 USA Games will be staged throughout Mercer County, NJ including competitions at Princeton University, Rider University, The College of New Jersey and Mercer County Park, with the Opening Ceremony taking place at the Prudential Center in Newark.

“I am very proud of Prudential’s leadership role in the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games in New Jersey,” said Pelletier, who is also executive sponsor of the company’s ADAPT business resource group, which is devoted to promoting understanding and hiring of persons with disabilities. “As an individual, colleague and friend to people with disabilities, and also as a father, I know the value of acceptance and respect for all individuals. Prudential does too.”
