HONOLULU, July 31, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Territorial Bancorp Inc. (Nasdaq:TBNK) (the "Company"), headquartered in Honolulu, Hawaii, the holding company parent of Territorial Savings Bank, announced net income of $3.7 million or $0.41 per basic and $0.40 per diluted share for the three months ended June 30, 2014, compared to $3.7 million or $0.37 per basic and $0.36 per diluted share for the three months ended June 30, 2013. The increase in net income for the second quarter of 2014 was primarily due to increases in interest and dividend income from investment securities and loans. This was offset, in part, by a decrease in gains on sales of investment securities and a decrease in loans.

The Company also announced that its Board of Directors approved a quarterly cash dividend of $0.15 per share. The dividend is expected to be paid on August 28, 2014 to stockholders of record as of August 14, 2014.

Allan Kitagawa, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, said "During the quarter the Bank's loan portfolio has grown to $903.0 million, a $46.5 million or 5.4% increase compared to December 31, 2013. The increase in the size of our loan portfolio has been a major contributor to our net interest income growth for the three months ended June 30, 2014. In addition, we are pleased to announce that we are now one of 38 member banks of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco and one of two in the State of Hawaii. We also have the distinction of being the only savings bank member of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco."

Interest Income

Net interest income increased to $13.4 million for the three months ended June 30, 2014 from $12.2 million for the three months ended June 30, 2013. Total interest and dividend income was $14.9 million for the three months ended June 30, 2014 compared to $13.8 million for the three months ended June 30, 2013. The $1.1 million increase in interest and dividend income was primarily due to an increase of $568,000 in interest earned on investment securities and an increase of $561,000 in interest earned on loans.

Interest Expense and Provision for Loan Losses

Total interest expense decreased to $1.5 million for the three months ended June 30, 2014 compared to $1.6 million for the three months ended June 30, 2013. The decrease in interest expense was primarily due to a $128,000 reduction of interest expense on securities sold under agreements to repurchase which occurred because of the payoff of higher costing borrowings. During the quarter, interest expense on deposits rose by $29,000 compared to the quarter ended June 30, 2013 due to an increase in deposits. During the quarter ended June 30, 2014, there was a $156,000 provision for loan losses compared to a $16,000 credit to the provision for loan losses for the three months ended June 30, 2013.

Noninterest Income

Noninterest income was $1.3 million for the three months ended June 30, 2014 compared to $2.3 million for the three months ended June 30, 2013. The reduction in noninterest income was primarily due to a $715,000 decrease in gains on sale of investment securities and a $294,000 decrease in gains on sale of loans.

Noninterest Expense

Noninterest expense increased to $8.7 million for the three months ended June 30, 2014 as compared to $8.6 million for the three months ended June 30, 2013. The increase in noninterest expense was primarily due to an increase in salaries and employee benefits, occupancy expense, which includes rent, depreciation, repairs and maintenance expenses, and an increase in equipment expense.

Income Taxes and Net Income

Net income for the three months ended June 30, 2014 increased by $58,000 or 1.6% compared to the three months ended June 30, 2013. The net income for the second quarter of 2014, as compared to the second quarter of 2013, included a $1.2 million increase in net interest income, a $715,000 decrease in gains on sale of investment securities, a $294,000 decrease in gains on the sale of loans and a $218,000 decrease in income taxes

Assets and Equity

Total assets increased to $1.648 billion at June 30, 2014 from $1.617 billion at December 31, 2013. Loans receivable grew to $903.0 million at June 30, 2014 from $856.5 million at December 31, 2013 as residential mortgage loan originations exceeded loan repayments and sales. The growth in loans receivable was funded by a $29.2 million increase in deposits and a $16.7 million decrease in cash and cash equivalents. Deposits increased to $1.318 billion at June 30, 2014 from $1.289 billion at December 31, 2013. Total stockholders' equity increased to $214.6 million at June 30, 2014 from $212.1 million at December 31, 2013 primarily as a result of the Company's current year's earnings of $7.2 million offset by $2.8 million of shareholder dividends and $3.9 million of share repurchases.

Asset Quality

Total delinquent loans 90 days or more past due and not accruing totaled $795,000 (4 loans) at June 30, 2014, compared to $1.6 million (5 loans) at December 31, 2013. Non-performing assets totaled $5.1 million at June 30, 2014 compared to $6.0 million at December 31, 2013. The ratio of non-performing assets to total assets declined to 0.31% at June 30, 2014 from 0.37% at December 31, 2013 and continues to remain one of the lowest in the country. The allowance for loan losses at June 30, 2014 and December 31, 2013 was $1.5 million and represented 0.17% of total loans.
