Deep Web tells the behind-the-scenes story of the un-indexed,
often intentionally hidden content that accounts for at least 96% of the
World Wide Web, focusing on digital currency Bitcoin and online black
market Silk Road.
EPIX viewers will be able to watch the premiere and subsequent showings
on TV, on demand, online, and on any of the hundreds of digital devices
through which the network can be accessed via the EPIX App.
Central to the film are looks at the rise of Bitcoin, the fastest
growing currency in the world, which is not controlled by any
government, regulating body or financial institution, and the arrest of
Ross William Ubricht, the 26-year-old entrepreneur who is alleged to be
“Dread Pirate Roberts,” the founder of Silk Road.
Deep Web will feature exclusive interviews with the chief
architects of both the Silk Road and the new black markets, as well as
exclusive interviews with Lyn Ulbricht, Ross Ubricht’s mother, in her
first film interview on her son’s arrest, and Joshua Dratel, Ubricht ’s
defense attorney. Other interviewees include Gavin Andresen, chief
scientist at the Bitcoin Foundation, and Andrew Lewman, the Executive
Director of Tor, a suite of tools that allows users to access content on
the Internet anonymously.
“Deep Web is a provocative, illuminating look into an online
world that is hiding in plain sight, and we’re thrilled to present its
World Premiere,” said EPIX President & CEO Mark Greenberg. “The film
takes viewers on a revelatory journey exploring the secrets of Bitcoin,
Silk Road, and other of the Deep Web’s many mysteries.”
Alex Winter is the writer, director and producer of Deep Web,
with Marc Schiller and Glen Zipper also serving as producers. Winter and
Schiller previously worked together on the documentary Downloaded,
about the rise and fall of Napster. Zipper’s prior credits include the
Academy Award® winning Undefeated and the Grammy Award® winning Foo
Fighters: Back and Forth.
Joining the production are Executive Producer Seth Gordon, Consulting
Producer Andy Greenberg, and Editor Dan Swietlik. Gordon is the
filmmaker behind Horrible Bosses, Identity Thief and The
King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters. He has also served in producing
roles on the documentaries Print the Legend, Mitt, Freakonomics
and Undefeated. Greenberg is a technology reporter for WIRED, and
his book, This Machine Kills Secrets, will serve as source
material for the film. Greenberg has had unrivaled access to key Deep
Web players, such as Julian Assange, and was the first reporter to
interview Ross Ulbricht. Swietlik is a renowned feature and commercial
editor and has collaborated with Michael Moore on Sicko and Davis
Guggenheim on An Inconvenient Truth.
“We could not be more thrilled to have EPIX presenting this vital film
to their wide-reaching audience,” said Schiller. “Although portrayed as
a novel innovation populated by hackers and techno-geeks, we look
forward to sharing how Bitcoin, Silk Road and the Deep Web have a much
richer history with stakes considerably more grave than the conventional
media has reported.”
"The Deep Web embodies some of the most significant and impactful issues
of our time, yet it is largely misrepresented and misunderstood,” said
Winter. “We are excited to be working with EPIX to bring this
extraordinary story to light."
