GLG Announces GRAS Notification With FDA for High-Purity Rebaudioside D

V.GLG.H

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Oct. 2, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- GLG Life Tech Corporation (TSX:GLG) ("GLG" or the "Company"), a global leader in the agricultural and commercial development of high-quality natural sweeteners, is pleased to announce that it has submitted a Generally Recognized as Safe ("GRAS") notification with the United States Food and Drug Administration ("FDA") for its high-purity Rebaudioside D stevia extract product. This notification represents many months of work to develop the product and all required documentation under the FDA-administered GRAS process to demonstrate that GLG's Rebaudioside D extract meets the FDA's criteria for safety. This included in-depth consultation with GRAS Associates, LLC, who convened an independent panel of scientists to spearhead this safety assessment.

GLG's latest GRAS filing furthers its commitment to providing the most advanced high-quality sweetener options to its global customer base. Dr. Luke Zhang, Chairman and CEO of GLG, commented that "to the best of our knowledge, GLG is the only company in the global stevia industry that has developed and applied for FDA GRAS certification for all of the rarer steviol glycosides, including Rebaudioside C, Rebaudioside D, and Rebaudioside M." Dr. Zhang also emphasized GLG's 2014 agricultural program, which is focused on the continued development, through non-GMO methods, of specialized strains of the stevia plant that will contain significantly higher levels of these otherwise relatively scarce glycosides. The 2014 program builds on the successful results already attained in the 2013 development cycle.

The Rebaudioside D GRAS filing complements GLG's previous GRAS filings, which span its entire product portfolio of naturally sourced sweetener options. GLG continues to be at the forefront of stevia-related GRAS certifications, having the largest number of stevia products certified under the GRAS process. Beyond stevia, the company has also submitted a GRAS application for Luo Han Guo extracts of various purities, currently pending FDA review. These submissions and certifications reflect GLG's commitment to ensuring that its full complement of naturally sourced sweetener products is compliant with the FDA GRAS program.
