WALTHAM, MA--(Marketwired - October 06, 2014) - Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services, today announced its Legacy eBook Collection on ScienceDirect now includes five new subject areas. The Legacy Collection consists of digitized, classic scholarly book content, now including nearly 13,000 books. The new subject areas are arts and humanities; computer science; economics, econometrics and finance; immunology and microbiology; and mathematics. In addition, there are newly digitized books in the engineering and the biochemistry, genetics, and molecular biology collections.
The Legacy Collection includes books with contributions from notable authors like leading business management thinker Peter Drucker, and Nobel Laureates such as Lev Davidovich Landau, George Olah, Peter Diamond and Sir Frank McFarlane Burnet. For the first time, the books in the Elsevier's Legacy Collection are also being made available to more than 70 third-party ebook distributors. Customers can purchase these revived titles through online retailers or through library ebook service providers.
"We've seen tremendous response from educational institutions and others to making this historical foundational content available electronically," said Sal Gelardi, Senior Vice President, Global Book Sales at Elsevier. "Many of these classic scholarly works are still relevant today. The expanded Legacy Collection provides digital access to even more works from leading scholars and researchers across a wide set of important subject areas."
Many of these newly digitized foundational books in the Legacy Collection were difficult to find in print or out-of-print altogether. Now the content is fully integrated on ScienceDirect, which enables digital searching and deep reference linking on this important historical reference material. This allows libraries to complete collections and expand holdings without the burden of locating or borrowing.
The 20 subject areas are:
