Cenovus donates $450,000 to Medicine Hat School District

T.CVE

CALGARY, Oct. 23, 2014 Cenovus Energy Inc. (TSX: CVE) (NYSE: CVE) today announced a $450,000 donation to be made over three years to Medicine Hat School District No. 76 to support its literacy initiative. The donation will provide literacy resources for more than 7,000 students in 15 schools in the Medicine Hat area. This project represents a key step towards the district's goal of improving reading and writing skills for all of its students.

"We know that literacy development is foundational not only for the success of our students but for the success of our community," said Dr. Grant Henderson, Superintendent, Medicine Hat School District No. 76. "We are extremely pleased with the partnership formed with Cenovus as we work together to support our students to become highly successful and thereby help to create a stronger society."

"Learning is a major focus of Cenovus's community investment program," said Leanne Courchesne, Cenovus Group Lead, Community Investment. "By supporting literacy initiatives such as this, we believe we can help give students the skills they need to stay in school, graduate and go on to have better lives."

Cenovus's donation will be used to expand library collections at the district's 15 schools. At the four secondary schools in the district, the funding will also help transform existing library space into learning commons, a concept that focuses on dynamic, collaborative learning experiences for students. In the learning commons model, physical space is flexible, with furniture designed to be moved around freely. A learning commons could include a coffee bar, where students can access Wi-Fi or an interactive whiteboard where students and teachers can gather for lively discussions.
