Texas Instruments and NCTM Launch New Resources to Help Teachers Implement Common Core State Standards

DALLAS, Oct. 28, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Texas  Instruments (TI), the most trusted brand in graphing technology, is excited to announce a collaboration with The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), the public voice of mathematics education. TI and NCTM have joined forces to develop practical ideas and classroom activities to help teachers respond to the changing educational landscape and implement effective teaching strategies that allow all students to succeed in mathematics. The new activities will be unveiled at the 2014 NCTM Regional Conference, October 29 -31 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

NCTM and TI unveil a series of activities to help teachers explore new math standards, like representing and analyzing data with boxplots.

The new classroom lessons for middle grades through high school support the teaching practices outlined in NCTM's new publication, Principles to Actions: Ensuring Mathematical Success for All.  This landmark publication supports implementation of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM).  The activities use TI-Nspire™ technology to demonstrate for educators how to implement the eight essential Mathematics Teaching Practices in Principles to Actions.

TI and NCTM will also mark the collaboration by hosting a live Twitter chat to explore effective teaching practices to support standards-based learning. Participants include Peter Balyta, Ph.D., president of TI Education Technology, NCTM Past President Gail Burrill and current NCTM Board member Jon Wray, along with leading math educators Jill Gough and Jennifer Wilson. The chat will take place on November 6 at 8 p.m. EST. Participants can join @NCTM and @TICalculators by using the hashtag #NCTMP2A. 

EVOLVING EDUCATIONAL LANDSCAPE:

The widespread adoption of college and career readiness standards, including the Common Core State Standards, presents an historic opportunity to improve mathematics education. The shift in math standards requires teachers to improve their teaching practices so they can engage students in tasks that require reasoning, problem-solving and communicating about mathematics.
