New York’s Beloved Burger, Hot Dog and Frozen Custard Stand Finds New Home in Japan

Shake Shack Inc. (“Shake Shack” or the “Company”) (NYSE:SHAK) crosses the globe to bring ShackBurgers® and a taste of New York to the Far East! Shake Shack® is proud to announce that together with its Japanese licensee it will open the first-ever Tokyo Shake Shack in 2016.

Shake Shack is proud to partner with SAZABY LEAGUE, Ltd.—the company and leadership, which brought Starbucks to Japan, and grew the brand into one of its largest international markets to date. SAZABY LEAGUE’s more than forty years of experience in food and retail lends the necessary expertise to launch Shake Shack in Tokyo. Shake Shack and SAZABY LEAGUE intend to open one Shack in 2016 with plans to open 10 total Shacks in Japan through 2020.

Shake Shack is a critically acclaimed, modern day “roadside” burger stand known for its 100% all-natural, antibiotic-free Angus beef burgers (no hormones added ever), griddled-crisp flat-top dogs, fresh-made frozen custard, crinkle cut fries, beer and wine, and more. A fun and lively community gathering place with widespread appeal, Shake Shack has earned a cult-like following around the world.

Fine casual couples the ease, value and convenience of fast casual concepts with the high standards of excellence in thoughtful ingredient sourcing, preparation, hospitality and quality grounded in fine dining.

“We are absolutely thrilled to bring our first Shack to Tokyo. For years, a tremendous amount of fans have asked us when we would come to Japan,” said Randy Garutti, CEO of Shake Shack. “We are incredibly honored to partner with SAZABY LEAGUE, a world-class, proven operator with over forty years of expertise including tremendous success leading Starbucks’ first international venture. We are truly humbled to become a part of Japan’s thriving food scene.”

The Tokyo menu will feature Shake Shack’s signature items including the ShackBurger, Shack-cago Dog®, classic crinkle-cut fries, beer, wine and frozen custard ice cream. The Tokyo Shack will be an essential part of Shake Shack’s mission to Stand For Something Good®. As it has done around the globe, Shake Shack intends to work with select local vendors, to create a truly one of a kind Shack for the local Tokyo community.

“We are truly excited about being able to introduce Shake Shack to the Japanese market,” says Ryota Tsunoda, Director of SAZABY LEAGUE. “We believe that the community gathering experience of Shake Shack, coupled with its commitment to premium ingredients, warm hospitality, and dynamic restaurant design will be widely accepted here in Japan.
