NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwired - May 18, 2015) - JetBlue (NASDAQ: JBLU) today announced plans to begin flying to Mexico City's Benito Juarez International Airport, one of the largest markets in the Americas. Mexico City will be JetBlue's second destination in Mexico and its 35th in the Latin America and Caribbean region, where JetBlue continues to expand its presence as a leading U.S. airline.
Daily service to Mexico City International Airport (MEX) will launch on October 1 from JetBlue's two focus cities in Florida, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) and Orlando International Airport (MCO). The new routes will give customers access to Mexico's capital while also bringing the JetBlue brand to a new customer base in Mexico City for the first time.
"As we think about JetBlue's leadership in the Caribbean and Latin America, Mexico City is a destination that we have been very eager to add to our network," said Dave Clark, vice president network planning, JetBlue. "We can't wait to inspire humanity in Mexico City with our award-winning customer experience that has wowed the rest of the region. At the same time, we are proud to continue enhancing our already growing presence in Florida."
JetBlue is offering an introductory fare of $99 available for one-way travel (a) from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood to Mexico City as well as one-way travel from Orlando to Mexico City. Fares go on sale today, and all introductory fare tickets must be purchased by May 19, 2015.
Service from Fort Lauderdale and Orlando to Mexico City will operate in the evening, with flights back to the U.S. from Mexico City offered in the early morning. The full schedule is available at jetblue.com.
The launch gives customers from Mexico City traveling to Florida a new option to reach Orlando's world-famous amusement destinations and Ft. Lauderdale's sandy beaches, as well as visit friends and relatives. Customers can also choose to continue on to other destinations in JetBlue's network such as New York; Washington, D.C.; Boston; and Nassau, Bahamas. From Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood, JetBlue currently offers 37 nonstop destinations, with up to 85 daily flights. The airline plans to grow to 100 daily flights to meet increasing customer demand in South Florida.
As one of the world's largest metropolitan areas, Mexico City is the oldest city in the Americas and is second only to London in the number of museums. The main plaza of Mexico City's historic center, Centro Histórico, is the largest plaza in Latin America. Extending in all directions, it is just one of the capital's attractions for visitors coming to see the city.
JetBlue will serve both routes with its Airbus A320 aircraft offering the most legroom in coach*, free first-run Hollywood movies on flights to Latin America and the Caribbean, and unlimited free snacks and soft drinks.
JetBlue continues to grow its footprint in Latin America and the Caribbean. The airline recently announced plans to serve Quito, Antigua, and Grenada, and to offer its successful Mint experience from New York to Aruba and Barbados on Saturdays between November 7, 2015 and April 30, 2016, and daily between December 19, 2015 and January 4, 2016.
