ComEd Plans to Launch Satellite Sites to Continue Administrating Financial Assistance Programs to Customers in Need

EXC

ComEd CARE program continues to provide financial assistance funds

ComEd today announced that it is working on a plan to help continue administering its CARE programs, which provides customers in need assistance with paying their electric bill. The plan includes opening mobile satellite locations and hiring additional personnel to process applications and help hundreds of low-income customers sign-up for the financial assistance offered by ComEd.

This announcement comes as a result of the state budget crisis, which has caused some social services agencies like CEDA, which administered ComEd’s CARE program, to shut down.

“Given the state’s funding situation, including the suspension of the Percentage of Income Payment Plan (PIPP), we understand this matter may affect some of our customers and their ability to pay their electric bill, and we want to minimize this impact,” said Val Jensen, senior vice president of Customer Operations, ComEd. “Our goal is to help our customers maintain continual seamless electric service, and help them get back on track to managing their utility bill.”

Jensen continued, “We also understand that with the shut-down of some social service agencies, access to sign-up for ComEd’s CARE funds for customers struggling to pay their electric bills has been eliminated. We will closely monitor any developments in the coming weeks and remain hopeful that this situation will be resolved soon. However, to help continue to provide our customers with the assistance they need, if matters are not resolved soon we are prepared to set up satellite locations in neighborhoods in Cook, Lake, Kane, Ford, Iroquois, and Dekalb counties to help administer the financial assistance funding.”

As part of its CARE programs, ComEd has funds devoted to helping eligible military families, veterans, and senior citizens, as well as individuals who may have experienced a job loss, illness, disability, or other hardship and are in need of help paying their electric bill. This is the fourth consecutive year in which ComEd has dedicated $10 million in financial assistance funds, and the company is looking to extend this assistance through 2021 under new legislation, known as ComEd’s Future Energy Plan.
