VMware Aligns Business Mobility Offering in Asia Pacific to US$24b Market Opportunity by 2016

Centralizes sales force for integrated AirWatch and VMware solutions

SHANGHAI, July 15, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW), a global leader in cloud infrastructure and business mobility, today announced that it has centralized its business mobility sales team in Asia Pacific and Japan to be led by Sanjay Deshmukh, general manager, business mobility, Asia Pacific and Japan, VMware. The integrated go-to-market sales team will address customer demand for a holistic approach to managing IT, based on VMware's Architecture for New IT that enables any application to securely run on any device.

Sanjay Deshmukh, General Manager, Business Mobility, Asia Pacific and Japan and Johnson Xu, Director of Business Mobility, China speaking about the need for employers to adopt an application-centric mindset and business mobility solutions at the VMware press conference at Mobile World Congress Shanghai.

On the sidelines of Mobile World Congress Shanghai, VMware reiterated its strategy in Asia Pacific to help customers realize the benefits of Business Mobility. VMware offers a unified hybrid cloud platform that creates business innovation, new business models and new applications to be delivered secure to internal and external customers.

The total addressable enterprise mobility solutions industry in Asia Pacific, which includes applications, devices, security, middleware, and professional services will grow from US$19b in 2014 to US$24.3b by 2016, a 19.5% growth rate[1].

"We believe that we are on the cusp of the next major technology wave in Asia Pacific, with organizations paying close attention to the future of business processes in the mobile-cloud era," said Deshmukh. "Next generation smartphone-powered workers in Asia expect employers to adopt an application-centric mindset and VMware's business mobility solutions enable organizations to adopt true business process transformation to satisfy employees," Deshmukh added.

"The Asia Pacific market for mobility is in its very early stages with 80% of organizations ill equipped to harness 3rd platform technologies, including Mobility, Cloud, Social and Big Data Analytics, to compete in the market," said Charles Reed Anderson, Head of Mobility and IoT at IDC Asia Pacific. "We see the next 18 months as a critical period for companies to accelerate efforts and investment in the enterprise mobility space. Companies are placing too much importance on devices and BYOD and our recommendation is to increase investment in security, middleware and infrastructure to enable better competitive innovation," Anderson said.

VMware's Business Mobility solution offering directly links to its foundation in cloud infrastructure, making it uniquely positioned to address IDC market predictions of growth in infrastructure investment. In addition, VMware's newly aligned Business Mobility sales team will offer mobile security, virtual desktop infrastructure and mobile enterprise management solutions that are top of mind amongst C-level executives in Asia Pacific[2].

Business Mobility in China

The enterprise mobility market in China is set to outpace the rest of the region according to IDC, growing from US$10.3B in 2014 to US$12.7B by 2016, a 23.5% growth rate[3]. Smartphone shipments in China are close to 100M units per quarter in 2015, with Apple, Xiaomi and Huawei taking the top market positions in China in 2015Q1[4].

VMware is addressing the business mobility opportunity in China by embracing country-specific mobile market trends. Under VMware Labs Asia, a framework to expand and diversify technology innovation through co-development and to reach into the technology ecosystem in China, VMware announced VMware Horizon for Linux earlier this year. This expanded VMware's virtual desktop solution with capabilities to include support for Red Hat and Ubuntu-based Linux-based desktops. Customers can simplify desktop management using the VMware Horizon platform to access Windows and Linux applications, centralize management capabilities and allow end-users to remotely access Linux desktops and applications from mobile devices without compromising security.

VMware Horizon for Linux is the first VDI solution on the market that supports GPU functionality on Linux workstations. It enables customers to reduce capital and operational expenditures with a VDI environment for Linux at a lower software license cost. VMware is also partnering with CS2C to promote local desktop operating systems such as Neokylin in China.

"VMware Business Mobility solutions have a strong value proposition that can address the unique market dynamic in China," said Johnson Xu, Director, Business Mobility, China, VMware. "VMware is demonstrating its leadership in new areas of innovation through joint efforts in China," Xu added.
