UPS Canada gives $1 million to United Way in 2014

MISSISSAUGA, ON, July 22, 2015 /CNW/ - Once again, United Way says 'thanks a million' to UPS Canada for raising more than $1 million in 2014 across the country. UPS was honoured with United Way Centraide Canada's prestigious national 'Thanks a Million' award, presented at the Toronto Region Board of Trade on June 17.

UPS is a long-time supporter of United Way, both nationally and internationally. The "Thanks a Million" award celebrates organizations that, through corporate charity and the combined efforts of employees and members, contribute $1 million or more to United Way nationwide.

"We're very proud to support an organization that shares our dedication to strengthening our communities across Canada," said Michael Tierney, president, UPS Canada. "Throughout the country, our employees are a powerful force, supporting our philanthropic culture on a daily basis and we wouldn't have reached this milestone without them. They truly make an impact in their communities by volunteering their time and talents to people and organizations in need year over year," he added.

Across Canada, UPS employees are united in their efforts to inspire change. Each UPS facility in Canada takes part in an annual United Way pledge campaign, to help raise funds to support a wide range of programs, including improving education, eliminating poverty and promoting healthy living in local communities. Throughout the year, UPS employees and partners hold events across the country in support of this initiative. On June 6, 'Pulling for U' Plane Pull took place in Vancouver, BC, as one of the most anticipated fundraising initiatives. 12 teams of UPSers, along with friends and families, participated in the event, which raised over $35,000.

"As a national movement, we are dedicated to improving the lives of Canadians in over 100 local communities across Canada. It's only possible to do this work with the tremendous support of champions like UPS and the amazing commitment of its employees. UPS's ongoing partnership and generosity is making a real difference in the quality of life for so many Canadians," said Dr. Jacline Nyman, President and CEO, United Way Centraide Canada.

UPS encourages its employees to challenge themselves to do more than just their day-to-day job. This past year, Samantha Mota, an 8-year UPS employee, was asked to participate in the United Way sponsored employee program. This special assignment was offered because of her enormous efforts involving United Way initiatives at UPS. Samantha was responsible for the labour division, consisting of 41 campaigns, across 15 agencies that are currently funded by United Way Peel through the Priority Community Fund.

"I'm honoured to be part of the UPS Canada team, as we work together to give back to our communities," said Samantha. "The experience has provided me with the opportunity to build a strong skill set that enriches both my personal and professional goals. This exposure has granted me the privilege to become a member of the Board of Directors at the Peach Ranch, which is one of the 54 funded agencies with United Way of Peel," she adds.

In 2014, UPS employees, alongside their families and friends logged 70,393 volunteer hours that benefitted local community development, youth education, social issues and the environment. UPS Canada is committed to helping the company complete 20 million hours of global volunteerism and community service by the end of 2020. By UPS achieving this goal, non-profits will receive volunteer assistance valued at more than *$460 million by the end of the initiative.
