Prudential Financial, Inc. (NYSE: PRU) and the USO of Metropolitan New
York today announced that they will partner to open a new USO center in
Terminal B at New Jersey’s Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).
The center is expected to be open by the end of the year, giving the
thousands of service members and their families who pass through EWR a
place to call home.
“We are very excited to partner with the USO on their Newark Airport
center. We are passionately committed to being a good corporate citizen
in the city of Newark, our headquarters city since Prudential was
created in 1875,” said Barbara Koster, senior vice president and chief
information officer at Prudential. “Prudential also has a deep
appreciation for the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces who
selflessly defend our country. We’re equally passionate about
demonstrating our appreciation for their service. Working with the USO
on this project gives Prudential an excellent opportunity to show our
respect by offering them and their families a comfortable place for
refreshment and relaxation during their travels.”
The Newark Airport USO center will be a place for service members and
their families to relax before and after flights or during layovers. The
center will be open seven days a week, 365 days per year and is easily
accessible from all airport terminals.
“Our centers remain the #1 most utilized program offered by the USO and
are the core of our mission—providing a home away from home for service
members and their families. We are so thankful to Prudential for their
leadership and commitment to serving the military in the greater Newark
community and around the world,” said Brian Whiting, President and CEO,
USO of Metropolitan New York. “Prudential’s partnership as the title
sponsor of this center and their $1,000,000 contribution allows us to
provide vital programs and services to our troops and their families.”
Prudential has a long history of support for military service members
and their families, and for transitioning veterans. In 2010, Prudential
created an Office of Veterans Initiatives to serve as an umbrella for
all the company’s programs and initiatives that have an impact on the
military community, including training, recruiting and hiring, employee
engagement, philanthropic support, and thought leadership.
“The underlying mission of the Office of Veterans Initiatives is to make
it possible for Prudential to have a deeper, more meaningful impact on
efforts to remove barriers to employment for veterans and military
families,” said Charles Sevola, vice president and head of Veterans
Initiatives at Prudential. “Our programs provide veterans and military
spouses access to quality education, job training, and employment
opportunities so that they can better leverage the skills and talent
they bring to the workforce.”
The Office of Veterans Initiatives provides job training for sustainable
careers in information technology and business operations for service
members and their families; professional development services for
employees with military backgrounds and those interested in issues
related to veterans; thought leadership that encourages corporate peers
to adopt programs to help veterans build successful post-military
careers; financial and volunteer service support of nonprofit
organizations that help military service members and their families who
need assistance transitioning back to civilian life; and financial
literacy information to help ensure the financial health and wholeness
of post-military services members and their families.
The USO lifts the spirits of America’s troops and their families
millions of times each year at hundreds of places worldwide. It provides
a touch of home through centers at airports and military bases in the
U.S. and abroad, top quality entertainment and innovative programs and
services. The USO also provides critical support to those who need it
most, including forward-deployed troops, military families, wounded
warriors, troops in transition and families of the fallen. The USO is a
private, non-profit organization, not a government agency. USO programs
and services are made possible by the American people, support of
corporate partners and the dedication of volunteers and staff. To join
