Briggs & Stratton Backup Power Experts Help Homeowners Select The Best Standby Generator Size For Their Home

MILWAUKEE, Aug. 18, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The backup power experts at Briggs & Stratton Corporation (NYSE:BGG) are offering helpful tips for homeowners researching the right-size standby generator system for their home's electrical needs.

"Homeowners who do a little research before making a standby generator system purchase are usually pleasantly surprised to learn they don't need a larger, more expensive generator to power all the items they want to operate during an outage," said Amanda Grandy, marketing manager for Briggs & Stratton Standby Power. "Emerging power management systems, like Symphony® II, are helping homeowners power all of their home's lights and appliances with a smaller — and more affordable — generator system."

Symphony II Power Management allows homeowners to select up to eight high-wattage appliances and manages the distribution of power from the generator to those appliances. This load management ensures the generator won't overload.

According to www.powernow.com from Briggs & Stratton, the steps a homeowner should take to determine the right-size generator for their home's backup power needs include:

Determine What Needs Power

A homeowner should first make a list of all the household items they want to remain powered in the event of a power outage. Some appliances in a home, like a clothes dryer or air conditioner, take a large amount of power to function while other household electrical items, including lights and televisions, take very little. The number of home electrical loads and their corresponding electrical wattage amounts will determine the size generator necessary for the homeowner's needs.

Reference a Generator Size Calculator

Once a list of household items has been made, they can be entered into the Briggs & Stratton Standby Generator Buying Guide & Size Calculator at www.powernow.com. This free online calculator takes the guesswork out of sizing a generator.  Homeowners can select what needs to be powered during an outage from a list of electrical household items. The calculator then determines a suggested generator model that would provide enough power.

Find a dealer in your area

Once a generator has been selected, a homeowner should find their local dealer and set up a free in-home consultation to determine if the selected generator is the best model for the home's power needs. The dealer will also walk through the installation process and handle any other onsite needs that may be required prior to installation.
