BACKGROUND: PECO is proud to be part of the team of critical
services and play an integral role as Philadelphia hosts the World
Meeting of Families and Pope Francis’ historic visit to the United
States. In celebration, the company will mark the occasion with a
once-in-a-lifetime, custom show on the Company’s famed Crown Lights
message system. Running each hour from 5 p.m. – 9 a.m. the show will
feature a dazzling display of the sites and images that make our region
unique. PECO has been displaying messages atop its 23rd and
Market Street headquarters since July 4, 1976. Since that time, the
company has saluted local community and non-profit organizations with
more than 17,500 messages. The new, energy efficient system, unveiled on
July 4, 2009, contains more than 2 million, new, energy-efficient LED
lights with color capability.
Also, during the past several months PECO has worked with the City of
Philadelphia, the World Meeting of Families, local and federal agencies,
and others to ensure a safe and successful event for residents and
visitors alike. The company has inspected hundreds of manholes and
individual pieces of equipment and completed any preventative
maintenance work to ensure safe and reliable electric and natural gas
service. In addition, more than 150 PECO employees will leave their
family and friends to work throughout the weekend, stopping only for
meals and required rest at local company facilities. Specifically:
-
Crews and other resources will be pre-staged throughout the area, in
four key zones, to quickly respond if needed.
-
Specialized employees will staff local emergency centers in Chester,
Montgomery and Philadelphia counties, as well as the Multi-Agency
Communications Center (MACC).
-
A team of employees will operate a special Papal Visit Command Center
at the Company’s Market Street Headquarters.
-
The Company also will activate its Emergency Response Organization
beginning Friday, September 25 through Monday, September 28.
