LAS VEGAS, Feb. 17, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Las Vegas Sands Corp. (NYSE: LVS) is proud to celebrate its team members and their service to the community on February 17 for National Random Acts of Kindness Day. The day is celebrated by individuals, groups and organizations to encourage acts of kindness.
Team members in Las Vegas participated in 24 events throughout the year in 2015, spending almost 8,000 hours volunteering for events benefitting local charities with local and international reach, including Clean the World, Race for the Cure and U.S. Vets Las Vegas.
One of the grass roots acts of kindness that has since developed into an annual event for Las Vegas team members is the Festival of Love. The event benefits New Beginnings Ministries, a non-denominational bible-based church also started by a team member. For the last eight years, team members have volunteered to donate food, supplies, clothing, shoes and haircuts to those in need.
"Anything I present to the company, they support it 100 percent," says Nicholas Oyola, supervisor of tablegames at The Venetian and The Palazzo. "It takes me a year to get all of the donations gathered, most of which come from the company," continued Oyola. "We used to have team members cook the food, but this last year the food was prepared in the employee dining room. Team members are always willing to help and my favorite events are when the team members get involved."
In 2015 at Sands Bethlehem in Pennsylvania, over 1,000 team members volunteered 2,300 hours at various events, including the Victory House, a local home for Veterans recovering from drug and alcohol addiction and Angel 34, an organization that hosts events for children of Lehigh Valley that have been diagnosed with cancer. Sue Matthews, facilities project manager at Sands Bethlehem, has been volunteering at Angel 34 since 2007. Since serving on their board since 2009, she has coordinated fundraising for all of the events and activities throughout the year, as well as a medical scholarship for students that wish to go into the medical field to help fight cancer.
