United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX) today unveiled an ambitious new program called "Natural Leader" to ensure its business operations, suppliers and products increasingly contribute to a more sustainable world.
Sustainability goals have had a significant impact on UTC over the years. In the last 20 years alone, UTC has cut its water usage by more than half, and its greenhouse gas emissions by more than a third in absolute terms – even as the company's sales tripled.
This latest program targets a 25 percent reduction in water usage and 15 percent reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from current levels over the next five years. It also extends sustainability incentives to UTC's supply chain and places the company on track for an 80 percent reduction in GHG emissions by 2050, in line with United Nations targets.
The new program and its goals were announced today at "Growing Cities: An Atlantic Forum on Sustainable Urbanization" in New York City.

As the world's largest provider of building systems, United Technologies is already actively engaged in making urban centers more sustainable places to live and work. The company's long-lived aerospace products also play a vital role in the sustainability of commercial air travel between cities.

UTC's new sustainability program is the latest in a long-running series of efforts to eliminate waste and increase efficiency. Starting three decades ago, UTC was among the very first companies to begin tracking resource usage with the aim of lowering consumption and emissions.
Worldwide interest in more sustainable building systems has never been higher. A recent study by Dodge Data & Analytics shows global demand for sustainable buildings is expected to double by 2018, as global green construction continues on its pace of doubling every three years. At the same time, the world's leading airframers have record backlogs for energy-efficient commercial aircraft.
In the new Natural Leader program, UTC for the first time is extending sustainability goals to its supply chain by incentivizing suppliers to integrate sustainability practices in their own business operations. UTC's sustainability focus also works for shareowners by delivering millions of dollars in savings from reduction of energy, water and other resources.
