Nippon Otis to Modernize Elevators for U.S. Embassy in Tokyo

TOKYO, Feb. 18, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Nippon Otis Elevator Company was awarded the multi-million-dollar Chancery Elevator project to modernize elevators at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo, Japan. As a part of this project, Otis will supply four Gen2® elevators with the CompassPlus™ destination management system, the latest destination management technology. Otis is a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

The modernization of the elevator system will result in significant benefits for the customer and users. Otis Gen2 elevators with flat-belt technology provide superior ride quality and passenger comfort. They are equipped with the latest safety standards, including the Pulse™ system, which automatically monitors the integrity of the elevator belts 24/7. The CompassPlus destination management system is anticipated to reduce elevator waiting time and transport passengers to their destinations faster.

Otis elevators were installed in the U.S. embassy building when it was built in 1976, and Otis has serviced the embassy's elevators since then.

"We are excited about this opportunity and believe our technology and product offerings are key differentiators," said Hiroshi Yamagami, representative director, Zone Operations, Nippon Otis Elevator Company. "The U.S. Embassy in Tokyo has been a Nippon Otis customer since 1976, and we are honored to continue supplying our products, systems and services to one of Japan's key foreign government buildings."

About Gen2 Elevators
The Otis Gen2 elevator system uses innovative flat-belt technology to produce a system that weighs less, lasts longer and requires minimal machine room space. The patented flat-belt technology together with the Otis Pulse system can detect fatigue and disconnection inside the belts by checking electrical resistance 24/7. The Gen2 system requires less energy, and does not require any additional lubrication, eliminating the need for storage, cleanup and disposal of hazardous waste. In addition, no derailed cases involving Gen2 elevators were reported when the Great East Japan earthquake occurred in 2011; an example of the Gen2 system's robust design.

About the CompassPlus Destination Management System
The CompassPlus destination management system delivers a variety of benefits, including improved efficiency and performance, reduced traffic within a building and shortened waiting times for lifts. Through innovative technology developed by Otis, the CompassPlus destination management system allows a user to make a request for a specific floor on the hall screen. The system then directs the user to a specific lift. The CompassPlus system features Otis' patented SmartGrouping technology that organizes travel by grouping passengers and stops. Passengers going to the same destination are assigned to the same elevator, and SmartGrouping also assigns elevators to serve a group of floors or a zone, resulting in faster and better-organized service. Studies show that CompassPlus technology allows passengers get to their destination 26 to 42 seconds faster than conventional destination management systems in an average 15-floor building.
