EAST HARTFORD, Conn., Feb. 29, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Pratt & Whitney, a division of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX), has conducted successful testing of ExxonMobil's Mobil JET™ Oil II and Mobile Jet™ Oil 387, and NYCO's Turbonycoil® 600 synthetic oil for use in the PurePower® engine family. The company has completed qualification testing of Mobil JET Oil II for use in the Airbus A320neo, which is in service today with Lufthansa, and the Bombardier C Series. Pratt & Whitney is on track to complete the oil testing program across all PurePower engine platforms by the end of 2017.
The testing program is part of the multi-year technical and commercial agreements
Pratt & Whitney has with ExxonMobil and NYCO. The agreement with ExxonMobil covers the complete PurePower engine family for the Airbus A320neo, Bombardier C Series, Mitsubishi Regional Jet, Embraer's second generation E-Jets, Irkut MC-21 series aircraft, and Gulfstream G500 and G600 business jets. The agreement with NYCO includes testing for the Airbus A320neo and Irkut MC-21.
"We are very pleased with the progress to date on the multi-year oil testing program with ExxonMobil and NYCO that will span the complete family of PurePower engines," said Greg Gernhardt, president, Pratt & Whitney Commercial Engine Programs. "Our PurePower engine program also continues to reach important milestones with our customers, including entering revenue service with Lufthansa Group last month. The PurePower engine is the only next generation engine in revenue service today for single aisle aircraft."
"With a backlog of 7,000 engine orders, including options, for the PurePower engine family, this is an exciting time for Pratt & Whitney and our employees, suppliers and partners," said Dave Emmerling, vice president, Strategic Sourcing & Contracts. "Our suppliers and partners play an important role in ensuring we can deliver on our customer commitments. These agreements recognize the considerable expense Pratt & Whitney incurs in testing these oils as part of our engine development programs and provide us with enhanced ongoing technical support from ExxonMobil and NYCO. These oil companies, in turn, benefit from greater access to fleet and Pratt & Whitney test data."
Pratt & Whitney's PurePower engines have 30,000 hours of testing and 48,000 cycles. The PurePower Geared Turbofan engine reduces fuel burn, emissions, noise and overall operating costs. PurePower engines are the only engines used on the Bombardier CSeries, Mitsubishi Regional Jet, Gulfstream G500 and G600 business jets, and Embraer's second generation E-Jets and are offered as an option for the Airbus A320neo family and the Irkut MC-21 series aircraft.
