MIAMI, June 16, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Verizon
Wireless has recognized Rodolfo "Rudy" Llanes, chief of police of the Miami Police Department,
with a HopeLine Hero award during the United Automobile Insurance Company/Do The Right Thing Summer Salute Awards Night on
Wednesday, June 15. Verizon, a longstanding supporter of domestic violence awareness and
prevention, launched the HopeLine program in 2001 to prevent, educate and empower individuals in the fight against domestic
violence. The HopeLine Hero award honors notable members of the community who have dedicated efforts and time to raise awareness
about domestic violence prevention.
Chief Llanes, a graduate of the FBI National Academy and a 29-year veteran of the Miami
Police Department, has been involved in numerous programs dedicated to spreading public awareness about domestic violence. Most
recently, last October, he and the Miami Police Department's Domestic Violence Unit held a rally
for the Miami-Dade County to honor victims of domestic violence. Llanes will also lead the
upcoming "Back Without a Bang!" youth rally this September, made up of 700 fifth graders to pledge against any form of
violence.
"I've been an active community member since the age of 14, and I've always felt a need to be involved and give back," said
Chief Llanes. "It's important to instill in our young generations a positive non-violent behavior and a sense of social
responsibility. I'm grateful to be honored with the HopeLine Hero award."
In addition to the recognition, Do the Right Thing, a non-profit organization dedicated to recognizing and rewarding
school-age youths for positive accomplishments, behavior and good deeds, will receive a $10,000
Verizon HopeLine grant in Chief Llanes' honor.
"Verizon has been a long-time philanthropic supporter of domestic violence prevention and care," said Roger Tang, president – South East Market for Verizon Wireless. "Community leaders like Chief Llanes are
so instrumental to organizations like Do the Right Thing, and we are proud to support their efforts."
