Sallie Mae Awards $95,000 in Scholarships to Utah Students

Annual Scholarship Program Helps Fulfill Growing Demand for Engineers, Nurses, and Teachers

Sallie Mae, the nation’s saving, planning, and paying for college company, today announced its Utah-based wholly owned subsidiary, Sallie Mae Bank, has awarded $95,000 in scholarships to 36 students who will attend Utah colleges and universities full-time in academic year 2016-17.

Sallie Mae Bank’s annual scholarship program provides financial assistance to deserving students whose courses of study will lead them to careers in some of Utah’s most in-demand professions, including engineering, nursing, teaching, and respiratory therapy. This year’s recipients received scholarships that ranged from $1,000 to $5,000. Since its inception in 2007, the program has awarded nearly $812,000 to more than 200 Utah students.

According to “How America Pays for College 2016,” the national study by Sallie Mae and Ipsos, nearly half of all families used a scholarship to help pay for college in academic year 2015-16. The study also found that scholarships and grants covered 34 percent of college costs last year, the largest proportion of any resource used to pay for college in the past five years.

“We commend our 2016 scholarship recipients not only for continuing their education, but also for committing themselves to careers in fields that will enhance Utah’s economy and quality of life,” said Paul Thome, executive vice president, Sallie Mae, and president, Sallie Mae Bank. “As a company dedicated to helping Americans save, plan, and responsibly pay for college, we are pleased to help these students make their dreams of higher education a reality.”

This scholarship will put me one step closer to achieving my dream of becoming an educator.”
