The environmental design strategy, developed and executed by the internal Dolby design team, conceived of the global
headquarters in San Francisco as a working lab, a vertical village, and a place where art meets science in inspiring ways.
“For our global headquarters, we wanted to create an environment that celebrates our past and inspires our future,” said Vince
Voron, Vice President and Executive Creative Director, Dolby Laboratories. “Its design embodies who we are and what we do, and it
enables people to do their best work.”
Dolby’s global headquarters, which occupies approximately 300,000 square feet, is a state-of-the-art facility comprising more
than 100 laboratories across 63,000 square feet and is designed to help catalyze innovation in science, engineering, and
production. These spaces include:
- Labs for research into human perception, sensory immersion, and other fields
- Mixing rooms for work in Dolby Audio™ and Dolby Atmos® sound, and in Dolby Vision™
imaging
- A recording studio with a mixing room
- Playback rooms for quality assurance, content review, and testing of audio and visual technologies,
including laser projection
- Living rooms and small cinema rooms to mimic real-world contexts for testing and research
- Support rooms, including facilities for prototyping, fabrication, and assembly
The new Dolby headquarters features artworks and new media installations, commissioned from artists around the world, throughout
its workspaces. These pieces present creative approaches to perception, highlight advances in Dolby engineering, and are meant to
inspire future innovations.
External and internal artists were given three principles to guide their creations: celebrate Dolby’s past, look toward the
future, and reflect on Dolby’s globally diverse culture. Twenty artists created 36 pieces and installations that explore sight and
sound, and that are modern interpretations of Dolby milestones, technologies, and historic achievements.
