pleased to announce today that Massachusetts' Worcester Fire Department received a $173,131 USD Federal Emergency Management Agency
(FEMA) grant to support the department's cooking fire prevention program for the Worcester Housing Authority (WHA).
The announcement was made last Friday in Washington, DC by Congressman James P. McGovern and Senator's Elizabeth Warren and
Edward Markey who thanked the Federal Emergency Management Agency for providing the funding. These competitive grant programs are
administered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in cooperation with the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA).
The Worcester Fire Department is working with the Worcester Housing Authority to implement a cooking fire education and
prevention program at the four WHA apartment towers. The towers have 759 units and house 862 elderly residents (86% of those
residents being disabled). The fire department will use the funds to equip all 759 apartment units with Pioneering's SmartBurners
and to train WHA staff and educate their residents.
