PG&E’s 2016 Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability Report Details Progress on Safety, Clean Energy and Other Goals

PG&E has released its 2016 Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability Report, which outlines the company’s progress on strengthening public and workforce safety, combating climate change, serving customers locally and enabling their energy choices, and promoting community and economic vitality, among many other areas.

“For PG&E, sustainability is about meeting the needs of today in a way that creates a better tomorrow. Our corporate commitment to sustainability spans the entirety of our efforts to provide safe, reliable, affordable and clean energy to our customers—and represents a personal commitment shared by the over 23,000 men and women of PG&E,” said Tony Earley, chairman, CEO and president of PG&E Corporation.

The comprehensive online report is filled with stories, statistics, and videos that bring PG&E’s commitment to sustainability to life. Particularly notable is a series of videos covering how PG&E is working together to build greater climate resilience, increase customer adoption of energy efficiency, use pioneering technology to reduce methane emissions and support the Blue Lake Rancheria tribe’s sustainable energy goals through a low-carbon community microgrid.

“Our employees live and work in the communities we serve, so how we go about doing our business is just as important as the business we do,” said Melissa Lavinson, PG&E’s chief sustainability officer and vice president of federal affairs and policy. “Our Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability Report shares the progress we’re making as we transition to a clean energy, low-carbon economy and work to deliver for our customers, communities and other stakeholders in a sustainable way.”

The Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability Report details the accomplishments PG&E achieved in 2015, notably:

  • Investing more than $5 billion to enhance our infrastructure and improve safety and reliability.
  • Joining California’s delegation to the COP21 international climate talks in Paris to support a global agreement to combat climate change.
  • Delivering some of the nation’s cleanest energy with more than half our electricity coming from resources free of greenhouse gases.
  • Achieving one of the nation’s fastest processing times for connecting private solar installations to the energy grid.
  • Helping customers save $227 million on their energy bills through energy efficiency.
  • Achieving industry-leading supplier diversity results, helping thousands of businesses to grow and hire.
  • Volunteering 87,000 hours building homes and playgrounds, cleaning state parks and mentoring students.
  • Providing career opportunities for veterans and women through our PowerPathway™ workforce development program.
  • Pledging to invest $100 million over the next five years to electrify our vehicle fleet.
  • Devoting $25 million through our Better Together Giving Program to enrich educational opportunities, protect our environment, promote emergency preparedness and support the vitality of our communities.

PG&E benefits from a Sustainability Advisory Council comprised of a diverse group of experienced leaders representing environmental and sustainability groups, community organizations, academia and policymakers.

“PG&E is proving every day that strong, climate-friendly policies can create new jobs and new economic benefits,” said Heather Zichal, president of Zichal, Inc., a domestic and international energy advisory consultancy, and former climate advisor to President Obama. “And as I look to the future, PG&E will continue to play that role. But I also think more work needs to be done, and that’s one of the reasons I’m excited to be on PG&E’s Sustainability Advisory Council.”

“PG&E has many opportunities for continued leadership—and that includes mobilizing their tens of thousands of employees,” said PG&E Sustainability Advisory Council member Michelle Moore, CEO of Groundswell and former federal environmental executive. “Every single one of them can be an advocate for sustainability, for clean energy, for community values and for supporting all of the customers that they serve. And that’s a rare asset.”

The council engages regularly with PG&E leaders to identify new areas of opportunity, inspire collaboration with new partners and help elevate issues within and outside the company to inform PG&E’s sustainability strategy and advance its clean energy, environmental stewardship, economic development and community vitality initiatives.
