Postmedia Announces 2017 Michelle Lang Fellowship in Journalism Winner – Zane Schwartz

Postmedia Network Inc. (Postmedia) is pleased to announce it has awarded this year’s Michelle Lang Fellowship in Journalism to Zane Schwartz. Starting Monday October 17, 2016, Zane is spending the first six months working at the National Post in Toronto before spending the next six months of the Fellowship working at the Calgary Herald.

With an Honours BA in history from the University of Toronto, Zane was previously a staff reporter at Maclean’s magazine as well as a freelance writer for various publications including The Globe and Mail and The Toronto Star. Zane has won a number of awards, including being named one of Canada’s Top 20 Under 20 by Youth in Motion, and more recently, the Gordon Cressy Student Leadership Award from the University of Toronto.

“The Fellowship is a fitting tribute to Michelle Lang’s memory as well as to the outstanding quality of her journalism. We are pleased to have a journalist of Zane’s calibre join us at the National Post,” said Anne Marie Owens, Editor of the National Post.

Michelle Lang, an award-winning Calgary Herald journalist, lost her life in December 2009 while on assignment for Canwest News Service in Kandahar, Afghanistan. She was the first Canadian journalist killed while reporting on this war.

Schwartz is the seventh recipient of this esteemed Fellowship which began in 2010. As part of this year’s Fellowship, he has chosen to pursue a project on the influence of money in Canadian politics, including who the largest donors are and whether their contributions result in policy changes that favour them.

“I am honoured to be this year’s Fellowship recipient and excited to join the award-winning journalists at Postmedia,” said Zane Schwartz. “This Fellowship gives me the opportunity to do the kind of fearless reporting that Michelle Lang inspired in up and coming journalists.”

This Fellowship is awarded annually to a recent Canadian university graduate, from any discipline, providing them the unique opportunity to apply his or her passion for writing and interest in current events. The fellowship includes a salary for the year, plus funding for a special project, as chosen by the fellow, on a topic of social significance inspired by Michelle’s own portfolio of work. Funding for the Fellowship is provided by the Calgary Herald and Postmedia Network, as well as the Michelle Lang Trust, with the Fellow’s special project funded exclusively by the Michelle Lang Trust.
