Canada NewsWire

-  More than 67,000 customers restored  -

TORONTO, Oct. 18, 2016 /CNW/ - Monday's lightning and wind storm damaged equipment and knocked out electricity delivery service to more than 73,000 Hydro One customers across Ontario. Hydro One crews have worked around the clock and restored power to 67,000 homes and businesses, with 6,000 customers still without power from 69 active outages.

Hydro One's Grid Control Centre tracks incoming storms and was able to quickly mobilize crews to respond to more than 280 separate outages yesterday and overnight. The high winds today could continue to affect customers in parts of the province.

"Hydro One has the ability to quickly draw together line maintainers, arbourists, helicopters, damage assessors and support staff when a storm is approaching our service area," said Greg Kiraly, Chief Operating Officer, Hydro One. "Crews from other areas of the province are helping with the storm restoration efforts in central Ontario today."

Customers looking for information on power outages can call 1-800-434-1234 or download the Hydro One power outage app. Customers can also register to receive proactive personalized text or email alerts about power outages. Hydro One is the first utility in Canada to offer this service. Customers can register for Outage Alerts online at HydroOne.com/MyAccount.

If the power system in your area is affected by bad weather, be sure to stay clear of any fallen power lines. If you spot a fallen line, keep at least 10 metres back, even if it does not appear to be live. Report it to the police and call Hydro One at 1-800-434-1235. Safety is at the core of everything Hydro One employees do. Not only are our crews trained in First Aid, every Hydro One vehicle is equipped with a First Aid kit.
