VULCAN, AB, March 9, 2017 /CNW/ - Today, Colleen Carey received The Co-operators Community Achievement Award for her outstanding community involvement. The award was created to honour Co-operators financial advisors who demonstrate outstanding support for the community in which they work, both through financial aid and volunteerism.

Colleen Carey, a Co-operators financial advisor in Vulcan, was named the Community Achievement Award winner for the Western region. Despite having joined The Co-operators just four years ago, Colleen has distinguished herself as a committed and passionate community advocate. Colleen believes that genuine and engaged community involvement is key to being a successful business owner. In fact, it's what drew her to The Co-operators in the first place.

Colleen serves on the board of directors of the Vulcan Brand Innovation Team, as chairperson of KidSport Vulcan County, and as a Junior High volleyball coach at County Central High School. In 2016, she and her staff members also supported the Vulcan Tinman Triathlon, the Soccer Club of Vulcan County, Vulcan TV, Vulcan County Early Childhood Coalition, RCMP Golf Tournament, and the local 4-H Clubs, to name just a few.

"I was very honoured to be nominated for this award and very surprised that I was the chosen winner of the 2016 Community Achievement Award, as the other nominees did so much in their communities as well. I am very passionate about giving back to my community and it was one of the reasons that I joined The Co-operators team, as the organization put such an emphasis on agency offices and staff getting involved in their community," said Carey.

As a co-operative, The Co-operators adheres to the seven international co-operative principles, one of which is "concern for community." The organization's 500 financial advisors are instrumental in converting this principle into action in communities across Canada. Carey's genuine concern for the well-being of her community, as evidenced by her record of involvement and support for local causes, embodies this principle.
