ABC Capitalizes On Retro Trend, Brings Back 'Roseanne,' 'American Idol'

DIS

The retro trend is in full gear, from fashion to entertainment, and Walt Disney Co (NYSE: DIS)'s ABC is preparing itself to capitalize on the fad.

After the recent announcement that ABC was reviving "American Idol," ABC followed up with the renewal of another nostalgic hit, "Roseanne."

Over two decades later, "Roseanne" will return to ABC with the original cast on board for an eight-episode season according to a report from CNN. The reboot will air sometime in 2018.

Revitalizing 'Roseanne'

The original run featuring the working-class Connor family from fictional Lanford, Illinois, lasted for nine seasons — from 1988 to 1997.

"The Conners' joys and struggles are as relevant — and hilarious — today as they were then, and there's really no one better to comment on our modern America than Roseanne," said ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey in a press release.

"It is planned for the midseason. We're still at the early stages." According to ABC's press release, the new "Roseanne" series will find the Connors continuing to deal with "the economic challenges of living pay check to pay check in 2018."

It will be interesting to see how the newest season will incorporate the father Dan, played by John Goodman, who suffered a heart attack in the eighth season and was killed off the show.
